FPL Price Changes Explained: Why They Happen and How to Stay Ahead

One of the trickiest parts of Fantasy Premier League isn’t picking players – it’s keeping up with their changing prices. Transfers by millions of managers cause values to rise or fall daily, and understanding how it works can save you frustration (and cash).

Why prices move

It all comes down to transfer activity:

  • If a player is being bought in large numbers, their price can climb by £0.1m overnight.
  • If a player is being sold heavily, their price can drop by the same amount.

Usually, a player’s price will move no more than £0.3m in one Gameweek, but those small swings can quickly affect your squad planning.

When price changes happen

Price updates are processed late at night (UK time), so the team you go to bed with might not cost the same in the morning.

Why it matters

Price changes don’t just affect bragging rights – they impact strategy:

  • You might miss out on a transfer target because their cost jumped overnight.
  • A squad full of fallers can leave you with less than the starting £100m budget.
  • On the flip side, chasing early risers can help you build team value and give you extra spending power later in the season.

Selling vs buying price

Here’s where many managers get caught out: the selling price isn’t always the same as the current price.

  • You only bank £0.1m profit for every £0.2m rise.
  • Example:
    • Bought at £5.0m, price climbs to £5.4m → Selling price = £5.2m.
    • Bought at £5.0m, price climbs to £5.3m → Selling price = £5.1m.
    • Bought at £5.0m, price climbs to £5.1m → Selling price = £5.0m (no gain).

On the Transfers → List view, you’ll see three numbers:

  • PP (Purchase Price) – what you paid
  • CP (Current Price) – the player’s market value
  • SP (Selling Price) – what you’d actually get

Staying on top of it

To protect your team value:

  • Keep an eye on who’s being bought and sold each week.
  • Consider moving early if you know you’ll be priced out later.
  • Don’t panic transfer just for value – balance it with fixtures and form.

Key takeaway

FPL price changes are as much a part of the game as goals and assists. The managers who stay alert to rises and falls can build more powerful squads over the season.
